Description

MQ-4 Methane & Natural Gas Sensor Module

The MQ-4 module detects methane (CH4) and natural gas. It is highly sensitive to methane and has low sensitivity to alcohol and smoke, which makes it a good choice for gas-leak alarms, kitchen-safety projects and Arduino / ESP32 learning kits.

Note: the MQ-4 is not designed to detect carbon monoxide (CO). For CO use the MQ-7; for LPG / butane use the MQ-2 or MQ-6.

Specifications

Target gases Methane (CH4), natural gas
Detection range 300 – 10,000 ppm
Supply voltage 5V DC
Heater power up to approx. 900 mW (about 150 mA at 5V)
Analog output (AO) 0 – 5V, higher voltage = higher gas concentration
Digital output (DO) HIGH/LOW, threshold set with the on-board potentiometer (LM393 comparator)
Indicators Power LED, DO LED
Pins VCC, GND, DO, AO
Module size approx. 32 × 22 × 27 mm

Usage tips

  • Warm-up: allow a few minutes after power-on before reading. For stable, calibrated readings, run the sensor powered for 24 – 48 hours on first use (burn-in).
  • Readings are relative: note the AO value in clean air, then set your alarm threshold above it.
  • AO can reach 5V. With 3.3V boards (ESP32, Raspberry Pi Pico) use a voltage divider; Raspberry Pi needs an external ADC.
  • The sensor head becomes warm/hot during normal operation – this is normal.
  • For learning and prototyping only – this module is not a certified safety gas detector.

Package includes

1 × MQ-4 gas sensor module
